Transformers are often combined with phase converters to build an electrical system that delivers proper power to three-phase equipment. While transformers have many properties, their basic application is in changing the voltage of electrical power. Some of the more common types are step-up transformers, buck-boost transformers and isolation transformers.

Most three-phase service in North America is nominal 208 volts, while single-phase service is nominal 240 volts. So, if you are using a phase converter to produce three-phase power, the three-phase voltage is likely to be 240. Many motors and electrical equipment are designed to operate on either 208 or 240 volts, but for some, 240V may be too high to safely operate. A transformer offers a cost effective, reliable method of adjusting voltage to the proper level.

Transformers have been widely used for over 100 years and are manufactured by many companies. There is usually nothing proprietary about their design and performance, so a customer has many choices when it is time to buy a transformer.

Just make sure the manufacturer is reputable company experienced in transformer design and production, then choose a supplier with competitive prices and good service.

The characteristics of the operated equipment can be important in choosing the correct transformer, so make sure the supplier has qualified technicians that understand your application.
