Several companies including Mitsubishi and Daikin manufacture high-efficiency heating and cooling units for small commercial buildings and large residences. These units utilize variable-speed controlled compressors and thus require three-phase power. They also must remain continuously energized even when heating or cooling is not required.
Only two types of phase converters are suitable for operating these systems, either rotary phase converters or Phase Perfect digital phase converters. Rotary phase converters are a poor choice for this application due to poor efficiency, high stand-by power consumption, high audible noise and the risk of voltage unbalance.
Phase Perfect converters operate at 97% efficiency, consume very little power in stand-by mode, are relatively quiet and provide phase-to-phase voltage balance within 1%. They are also available in outdoor Type 3R enclosures at a very reasonable cost. All these features make Phase Perfect the ideal phase converter for HVAC applications.
